Siblings Day Is TOMORROW!

Tomorrow, Saturday, February 18, 2012 is... SIBLINGS DAY! We are so excited for this special annual event. It's one of my favorites! I just love seeing the smiling faces of the younger siblings of our current students. Our siblings always come away from the weekend with a sense of pride that they got to experience college both academically and socially, and have something to strive toward in a few years. They also feel cooler having spent a weekend away with their brother, sister, or cousin at college. I know they'll be back to school reporting on their weekend saying to their friends, "Oh, I spent the weekend at Hofstra with my bro. It was so cool. We tie-dyed, learned about the stars, saw a comedy show, participated in a scavenger hunt, and even ate breakfast at midnight!"

For those of you who have registered your younger children or relatives, please read the information below. For those of you who are not able to make Siblings Day this year, don't be bummed! Look forward to next year when we hope you'll join us. There's also Spring Family Day in April!

Hofstra's Resident Student Association students and our staff, the Office of Parent and Family Programs, have organized an exciting program have so many fun-filled events planned for your younger children including a PRIDE Showcase featuring student talent; a campus wide scavenger hunt with a chance to win prizes; the men's basketball game (Go Pride!); a trip to the Hofstra Observatory to check out stars and planets; a traditional Hofstra late-night breakfast with tie-dying activities; and much more.

AND, don't worry, your children will be well-fed after three delicious meals of Saturday and the opportunity to taste what the campus dining facilities have to offer.

The check-in takes place noon to 1 p.m. in Hof USA, North Campus. Siblings will receive the program, t-shirt, ID card, dinner voucher and the PRIDE Hunt instructions. And we’ll be taking their photos with our Hofstra mascot! If you haven’t faxed us the Acknowledgment and Release Form (you may download it at the link below), please do so as soon as possible. Our fax is 516-463-7017. If you plan to bring the release with your child to the check-in, please comment to let us know. Your son or daughter will not be able to participate without the signed release.

Parents often ask us for Hofstra’s GPS address. Most GPS units allow you to select or search for Hofstra University in the Points of Interest section (this is the recommended way to find your route.) If you need an address for navigation, please use: 900 Fulton Avenue, Hempstead, NY 11550. (Fulton Ave. and Hempstead Tpke. are one and the same.) Please consult our interactive map at the link below to confirm which gate to use and to find campus buildings. You may park anywhere on the North Campus.

Soph (be) MORE!

Soph (be) MORE!

In order to reintroduce sophomores to Hofstra's wide array of leadership opportunities and ways to get involved on campus, the first ever Soph (be) MORE event was created and hosted yesterday, February 1, 2012.

As a member of the class programming committee, we have been brainstorming and planning this event for months. Sophomores had requested that Hofstra program more events for sophomores specifically, and we listened! We're looking to make the Soph (be) MORE event an annual tradition. I hope that your sophomore student had a chance to come to stop by yesterday, and become involved.

For many students, their first-year can be a difficult time to join a club with so much going on at once: transitioning to college life, juggling a full course load, studying, socializing, and working. This event provided a great opportunity for sophomore students to get reacquainted with the great clubs, student employment opportunities, get their DAR printed and read by an academic dean, learn about Alumni benefits, chow down on some great snacks, and even grab a free, nifty T-shirt.

For more information on the event, I highly recommend telling your student to read Jaclyn Congello-Vento's blog post on hofstrastudentlife.blogspot.com.

Please enjoy the photos below.

Have a great week,

Siblings Day 2012!

Do you know about Siblings Day? This month, on Saturday, February 18th, Hofstra's Office of Parent and Family Programs and the Resident Student Association are sponsoring the annual Hofstra Siblings Day.

Hofstra Siblings Day is a special collegiate experience open to all Hofstra students, specifically residents. Hofstra students may host up to two brothers, sisters, or other relatives (aged 13-17), are responsible for and must accompany them at all times. Guests arrive on campus Saturday morning (February 18, 2012) and may stay overnight in their Hofstra host student's residence hall room, provided the host receives his/her roommate's consent. Transportation to campus is not provided, but fun is!

Hofstra students have planned a variety of fun activities, including a PRIDE Showcase featuring performances from talented student groups, a Hofstra basketball game, a visit with the stars in Hofstra's Observatory, a traditional late-night breakfast, and much more. The registration fee of $30 per guest covers most meals and activities . Participants will leave campus with a glimpse of Hofstra's college life and their own "Siblings Day" T-shirt.

For more information and to register, please visit hofstra.edu/sibs.
