St. Baldrick's Event Raises Record $ for Children' Cancer

It has always been the goal of the annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation event at Hofstra University to raise enough money to get Provost Herman Berliner to shave his head in solidarity with children fighting childhood cancers. Every year, Dr. Berliner has said that if the school raised over $25,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, he would join in and shave his head. Over the past four years, the school has come close, but had not quite reached that $25,000 mark. This year, however, that goal was shattered. At the end of the event, students, faculty and community members alike raised over $36,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation!

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven national foundation dedicated to funding research towards finding cures for various childhood cancers as well as providing support for children and families battling cancer. The event is centered on groups and organizations collecting donations, culminating with an event where the team members shave their heads to stand in solidarity with children who lose their hair battling cancer.

The event at Hofstra is run by the Hofstra Roller Hockey team and alumus Tom Kostiw.  Also playing a big part in the event was the Hofstra North Shore – LIJ School of Medicine. The medical school raised a whopping $16,531 for the event with the Hofstra Roller Hockey coming in second with $3,803. The event, run out of the Hofstra Student Center by the Hofstra Roller Hockey Team (who was also celebrating their recent Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Championship win) was a huge success! On behalf of the Hofstra and the St. Baldrick’s Foundation we would like to thank any and all of our parents who donated or helped out with the event! We’re excited to come back next year and shatter this year’s record!
