Is Your Student Registered to Vote?

With the upcoming first presidential debate taking place at Hofstra University, campus is buzzing with excitement. Check out the following registration and voting information to better inform your student.

Is your student eligible to vote?

In order to vote, your student must:

·       be a United States citizen

·       be 18 years old by December 31 of the year in which you register (note: you must be 18 years old by the date of the general, primary or other election in which you want to vote)

·       live at your present address at least 30 days before an election

·       not be in jail or on parole for a felony conviction

·       not claim the right to vote elsewhere

·       have registered to vote

Is your student seventeen years old?

If their birthday is between today and December 31, 2016, they may register to vote.

If their birthday is between today and November 8, 2016, they may vote in the general election.

Where does your student live and where should they register?

Students have a few registration options:

Your student may use their school address, on or off-campus to register to vote.

Note, this will remain their address on file until changed. They can fill out a change of address form when they move.

Your student may use their permanent/home address in or out of state to register to vote and apply for an absentee ballot.

Note, there are time limits for absentee ballot applications. See New York State Timeline below. For other states, please look up timelines before deciding where to register. 

Where will your student vote?

If your student lives on campus and they use their campus address to register to vote, their polling location will be the California Avenue School, located on California Avenue next to campus.

October 14, 2016

Voter Registration Ends: Last day to register to vote in person or by mail for the General Election. (Mailed registration must be postmarked by Oct. 14th and received by OCT. 19th) 

October 14, 2016

Voter Registration deadline - In Person: In person registration: Last day application must be received by board of election to be eligible to vote in general election. If honorably discharged from the military or have become a naturalized citizen since October 14th, you may register in person at the board of elections up until October 29th   

November 1, 2016

Absentee Ballot return deadline- UOCAVA citizens: Last day for a board of elections to receive Military/Special Federal absentee application, if by mail and previously registered.  

November 1, 2016

Absentee Ballot Request deadline - By Mail: Last day to apply by mail for General election absentee ballot (Must be postmarked by this day).              

November 7, 2016

Absentee Ballot return deadline - By Mail: Last day to mail absentee ballot (by voter). Ballot must be postmarked by this date and must be received by the county board by Nov. 15th.         

November 7, 2016

Absentee Ballot Request deadline - In Person: Last day to apply in person for General Election absentee ballot.           

November 8, 2016

Absentee Ballot return deadline - In Person: Last day (Election Day) to deliver absentee ballot in person to the county board (by close of polls).
