5 Campus Resources Your Student Should Take Advantage of!

Are you a parent of an incoming first-year student? Here are 5 campus resources that will help make your student’s transition a smooth one!

1. Hofstra Students have access to a registered dietician/nutritionist. Is your student fearful of the freshman 15? New students should become well-acquainted with the University dietician in order to learn about a balanced, healthy, and nutritional lifestyle. The transition into college is hard enough without also having to worry about body image. Hofstra’s registered dietician can provide healthy alternatives for restrictive diets, such as gluten intolerance. To learn how to keep a balanced diet, even through the college transition, visit hofstra.edu/dining and click on Meet Our Dietician.

2. University Tutorial Program and Writing Center. Whether your student is excelling or struggling during their first semester at Hofstra, every student can benefit from the University Tutorial Program. Becoming a tutor is a great employment opportunity for new students on campus. Tutoring will provide a way for students to interact with others who are becoming adjusted to campus life. For those who are struggling with classes during their first semester, they should not wait to contact the tutorial program. For students with a literature or writing based major, Hofstra’s Writing Center is a resource every writer should be familiar with. Whether it is developing a topic, organizing ideas, or strengthening an argument, a qualified tutor can assist you in any step of the writing process. As an incoming student myself, I struggled with the difference between the high school and college workload. Many students such as myself feel that it will get better as the semester goes on, however, it is best to contact a tutor and identify the problem sooner rather than later. For information on the University Tutorial program visit hofstra.edu/UTP, call (516) 463-4953, or visit the office in room 012 of Memorial Hall. For more information regarding the University Writing Center call Mason Hall (516) 463-4908 weekdays before 5:00pm or Axinn Library (516) 463-7376 during evenings and weekends.

3. Student Counseling Services. Similar to academic issues, Hofstra students should not wait to contact a professional if they are experiencing emotional or personal difficulties. Students can rest easy knowing that all discussions held during counseling sessions with Hofstra University Student Counseling Services are confidential. Support is provided in hopes to promote the utmost personal growth and educational development for every Hofstra student that confides in Student Counseling Services at the Saltzman Community Service Center. To further inquire about Student Counseling Services call (516) 463-6791. All students should also call (516) 463-6789 in the event of any after-hours crisis or emergency.

4. Mack Fitness Center and Recreation/Intramural Sports. Hofstra provides a number of opportunities for students to stay active and fit while being on campus. There are a number of group exercise classes such as Zumba, intramural and club sports such as basketball and soccer, and recreational activities. Students also have access to Hofstra’s state of the art Fitness Center that is free of charge to every student. The beautifully designed David S. Mack Fitness Center includes 6 basketball hoops, 63 cardio machines, 50+ Cybex strength training pieces, ADA –certified circuit, a cycle studio, a yoga/Pilates studio, an aerobics studio, an indoor track, a lounge and computer station, and so much more. The Fitness Center is something all students should take advantage of through the year, as it is a great way to stay fit and also get away from the stress of assignments for a few hours. All students can visit Hofstra’s Fitness Center today at 235 Hofstra University, Hempstead NY or call (516) 463-4037 for more information.

5. No car on campus? The Hofstra shuttle is a safe and reliable method of transportation for students.
Hofstra University provides a shuttle that transports students to and from train stations, shopping malls, and certain destinations on campus. The shuttle runs to and from shopping centers like Stop & Shop and the Roosevelt Field Mall on weekends, and the Hempstead and Mineola train stations all week long. Students who may be studying late at night in either the library or off-campus can take advantage of the Hofstra shuttle, which runs from 10:00pm-5:00am. The shuttle stops at each location approximately on the hour and half hour. For questions during shuttle service times, call (516) 463-7878 or visit hofstra.edu/shuttle for an updated schedule.
