Thanksgiving Homestay 2016

This time of year is meant for being thankful, but also giving. Our Hofstra families were a direct reflection of that this Thanksgiving. Four Hofstra families volunteered to host a combined 14 international students! Our Office of Parent and Family Programs and the Office of International Student Affairs have arranged this opportunity for students who either were not able to make it home for the holiday, or who wanted to experience the holiday for the first time.

Hofstra University has had a rich, vibrant history of fraternities and sororities since 1936.  Our fraternities and sororities have become an integral part of our community, and members of these organizations have added positively to the fabric of student live and become active and engaged alumni.  Today, we recognize 27 social fraternities and sororities, listed below, who create a diverse, welcoming environment for our students.  These student leaders are engaged in community service, philanthropic efforts, and excel scholastically.

Important Announcement!

New Family Weekend Dates

What a time to be a Hofstra student! As many of you have heard, The Commission on Presidential Debates announced Tuesday that Hofstra will be hosting the first presidential debate on Monday, September 26, 2016. Tickets and volunteer opportunities will only be open to current Hofstra students.  Read more information about the Debate here. Hofstra students should check their Pride email account regularly.

Our annual Fall Festival: Alumni, Student and Family Weekend, which was scheduled to be held on September 23-24, must be moved to Friday-Sunday, October 7-9 due to the logistics and security necessary for the international broadcast of a presidential debate.

By moving Fall Festival, we will be able to host the same type and size festivity as we have over the past five years, with a full-scale carnival, concert, Family Weekend activities, and our new Pride Expo, without downsizing or compromising the community spirit of this signature annual celebration.

The Annual Alumni Awards dinner will remain on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at the Garden City Hotel.

To register for Family Weekend, please visit hofstra.edu/FW.

To those who may have already made plans to attend Fall Festival, we apologize for any inconvenience this change might cause.  If you have specific concerns, please call the Parenta and Family Programs Office at (516) 463-4698. Thank you and watch your email and social media news feeds for updates about Fall Festival/Family Weekend and our public debate programming calendar.

Seeking Purpose: Supreme Court Justice Sharon M.J. Gianelli

Tuesday April 12, students came together to have lunch and meet Supreme Court Justice Sharon M.J. Gianelli, who was elected to a fourteen-year term on the New York State Supreme Court in November 2014. As an alumnus of Syracuse University’s School of Social Work and Brooklyn Law School, Justice Gianelli has planted her roots within the justice system, specifically with the Adolescent Diversion Program for Nassau County. This was especially near to her heart because this was one of only nine pilot projects in the state that combined social work and the law when handling adolescent misdemeanor and felony cases.
